I started learning Japanese before there was a significant amount of interest in it stateside, aside from in the business world (and as a matter of cultural-work). I fell completely out of practice because there really wasn’t anyone I could talk to in Japanese on a regular basis. I’m eventually going to pick it up again because I’m starting to get really bugged that anime fans know more of the language than I do just by watching TV all the time.
