My grandparents have long since forgotten what our family crest looked like, and nothing my great-grandparents owned that might bear the crest has survived to be passed down. From what I hear, it was at least vaguely shaped like a butterfly or butterflies—it couldn’t have actually been butterflies, as that emblem was reserved for nobility. There were lots of crests that emulated the butterfly shape, however. I’ve done some digging and there’s a handful of crests for the Yamamoto name, none of which look anything close to a butterfly. I think at this point I’d either have to pay someone to look through records by prefecture, or wait for my brother to go to Japan as a translator and tell him to do some research while he’s over there.
