Manu Chao
Those first two albums..jeez. Saw him just last year for the first time, absolutely amazing live show. One of my favorite musicians, period.
De La Soul
De La Soul Is Dead is one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. I really really like two or three of their other albums, but for me, that was it. Amazing.
Beck
Honestly, I wanted to leave him off this list. The last two albums he did were just so…mediocre. But, his first several were absolutely inspirational and amazing. for me it was midnite vultures. i listened to that album so many times…
Chet Atkins
I was never really impressed by guitar virtuoso stuff. Eric Johnson and his ilk only held so much appeal for me. so i was surprised how much i was drawn to the sound of chet atkins. maybe it was because he wasnt shredding anything: he was composing beautiful, magical music on a guitar. an absolute perfectionist, an absolute pleasure to just sit and listen to.
Wilco
I’d really liked a few songs here and there from their earlier stuff, but it was yankee hotel foxtrot that really amazed me. the album is just…an experience. ive been disappointed with most of what ive heard since then, but for that one album..i was in love.
The Pixies
The first time I listened to come on pilgrim, i hated it. just sounded annoying. i was 15, and came back to it about 9 months later. then i bought all their albums.
Of Montreal
I just saw these guys live for the first time about a month ago, and i didnt realize how f n weird they are, i love it. they seem to have two distinct phases, the early stuff being very sing-songy, musical, and the last few albums much more dancy and personal. but its all really really good.
Led Zeppelin
If just because they quit when one of their members died. I dunno..what can you say about led zeppelin? they fucking rocked.
The Notorious B.I.G.
It had a lot to do with the producers, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, but still, his vocal style, off the cuff spur of the moment..i dunno, it was just entertaining. being a white kid from the suburbs, i was just entertained, didnt know a lot about what he was talking about. i just liked the way it sounded. i feel i understand more now though.
