I got a new MP3 player (Sansa Fuze 8 GB – Love it) and I have decided that I will only load songs on it that are labeled and tagged correctly. Perhaps this will get me started on organizing my music.
I have made a small start to this by separating out the songs I have by language (Hindi, Bengali, English, etc.), by genre (Classical, Film, Ghazals, Rabindrasangeet, etc.) and by category (Film albums, Compilations – by singer, mood, theme, etc.)
Trying to sort out songs that differ by bit rates, various combinations of paras, versions by singer (solos, duets, tandems) and moods (happy, sad) only complicates things but is necessary because I don’t want to delete a song thinking it is a duplicate only to find out that I have deleted a particular variation of the song.

Pics vs music

Wow! Organizing my pics was a breeze compared to this! This is going to take me a year or more and that is if I work on this every day. SIGH!

As I had expected, the biggest hindrance to getting started seems to be the categorization and organization of the digital music files. Most tag organizers do not use/recognize Indian music/songs so I don’t want to spend money on something which won’t wok for me but trying to do this by hand is going to be almost impossible.

This will require a lot of work but will be worth it. With over a 100 CDs, 300 (maybe 400) tapes and over 30,0000 mp3 songs, this will be a real challenge. The most complicated issue will be the categorization of songs. I have so many ways to categorize them. I will have to think about it.
