finally a realistic strategy! 1 year ago

Well I want to become certified as an environmental practitioner, but I also want to work on green buildings. I don’t want to go back to school full time, so I am just going to get certificates/diplomas in areas that are applicable.

Now enrolled in the Environmental Practice program, which could get me certified later on.

After that I will go to BCIT and just try drafting/design realm – the shortest course possible. If I like it I can get a diploma, if not I can just have a certificate and move into something different. That way I’m not spending a rediculous amount of time or $ on something I’m not sure of, but I can gain some good technical skills.

Eventually I would like to be LEED certified, which both of these training routes can feed into. Many consulting-related jobs really require LEED certification, which is hard to get, and requires some in-field experience, so that is a longer-term goal.

Volunteering with a green building resource center and also applied for a distance education certificate. no, i can’t afford more school, but i also can’t afford to be unhappy/poor later on in life.

between these two things i should have a foot in the door within the next year, as the latter is sort of a space to be ‘pre’ certified professionally. you become a ‘practitioner-in-training,’ and the certificate is set up to get you certified in particular professional directions. its all linked into an employment network, too.

this time around, i will network. i will treat everything related to this schooling as my business. i will NOT be scared to jump in. i will get good grades.

i am looking forward to school. just one class at a time i think will be perfect.

how do i find it? 2 years ago

Someday soon I want to be able to say: I’m a __ and I love my job. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to honestly say “I love my job”?

It would be some combination of enjoyable tasks, using my skills, improving the world, having a livable salary, and working with great people. Where are you, oh job of my dreams? Can I find you without going back to school?

ummm…maybe start by tapping into the great network of people around me who are working for a common cause: peace.

also start by being passionate and creative, as much as possible, in as many ways as possible, so that people will SEE what i think is important in life.

sometimes i talk about really trivial seeming things, which is fine sometimes, but it boils down to how you present yourself in each moment. for sure.

well, one of my problems here is that i recently graduated and do not have any experience with the type of work i (think i) want.

so i recently started to volunteer at a non-profit environmental law agency, taking part in the proposal-writing process. it feels really, really good, because it’s really the first step to even testing the waters career-wise. it also feels good because since i am volunteering my time, i feel they appreciate me.
