Our first adoption was a modified open adoption. We met our son’s birth mother before he was born and again when we came to pick him up. He was only five days old! Awesome. He is now 13.
The second adoption was three years ago. We were on the list for an older child through DSHS, but we ended up adopting a handsome youngster from Bangalore, India. He came with an escort and when he got here he was so brave and so sweet. He gave us each a cookie he’d brought all the way from India. He had a backpack with all his earthly possessions. He was 5 then and has learned English quickly and is developmentally on target.
Yes, there are some challenges. We are a multi-racial family (my husband and I are Caucasian, older son black, younger son East Indian). But we haven’t had any obstacles that cannot be overcome. I am so excited to see what the future brings with these two.
I say GO FOR IT! There are so many kids who need homes.
