Book #2
Recommended.
This book was good… once I got into it. At first, the representation of the vernacular was a bit of a hurdle, but I eventually got used to reading it. The story itself is very good and very sad. It follows a black woman from her childhood to the book’s present as she searches for a bees-and-flowers sort of romantic love and is set in the post slavery era (this is arguably Hurston’s most famous/celebrated book).

Book #1
HIGHLY Recommended.
I totally lucked out with this one—a professor offered to let us take any books we wanted and I chose this (among other things). I’m absolutely in love with the characters and the writing style… beautiful book.

I feel foolish wanting to read 25 books a year (after all, there are twelve months. I feel like I ought to sign up for at least 50) but I’ve decided to only count the books I read outside of my courses for pleasure. Seeing as I’m starting graduate school in the Fall and will most likely be overrun with things to read for those courses, I guess 25 is a modest but acceptable number.
