This one is the toughest goal. I consider myself to be an atheist because I don’t have a religion or spiritual practice and I don’t have a belief in a god. I find it hard to believe in organized religion because it feels so “wrong” to me. i know it can work for others, but I just don’t feel like I “belong” inside a church, temple, mosque, whatever, etc. I would like to think I could do this on my own, but I can’t do that either.
A spiritual path that works for me is one that emphasizes compassion, kindness, helping others (service), openmindedness, clearing ones mind (meditation, prayer, etc), and character building. I need a sense of community with like minded individuals. I would like a spiritual path that de-emphasizes doctrine or dogma.
I want to start attending services, even though I am opposed to organized religion. I have considered Buddhism and Unitarian-Universalism. I would also consider faith-based activities like volunteering in a soup kitchen or 12 step programs.
goals specifics:
praying or meditating daily for 5 to 15 minutes
reading more inspirational literature daily
reading affirmations that involve qualities above
doing altruistic things for strangers and friends
meeting once a week with others for the purpose of spiritual growth
I would also be willing to cultivate a belief in a higher power sans strict moral codes.
I will consider this goal “completed” if I can do the above for a period of three months. It will not end there.
