For some more european (i.e. cultural) classics and modern classics I’d say
Le Bal (Ettore Scola)
The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman)
8 1/2 (Fellini) (If you want more Fellini, add “La Dolce Vita” and “La Strada”)
Alexander Newski (Sergej Eisenstein; alternatively his more famous ‘Potemkin’)
Some Pasolini is a must. If you want hardcore, take the “120 Days”, but the “Decamerone” is the classic.
Werner Herzog… hmmm… “Fitzcarraldo” maybe. Fassbinder is a must – maybe the classic “Angst essen Seele auf”. Wim Wenders? So many to chose from. “Paris, Texas” or “Wings of Desire” – the latter is a “must have heard of”, the former is one I love. Both Classics

Monty Python are classic must-know movies. For a start there’s “Time Bandits”, but “Life of Brian” and “The Holy Grail” are the most quoted classics.

Disney’s “Fantasia” is a must-see cartoon. (I suppose so is “Akira”, but I never liked that, so just disregard)
Hal Ashby’s “Harold and Maude”, Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth” and a Woody Allen of your choice (they’re very different).

My film education ! 3 years ago

Mr.ncot is always surprised by all the classic films I’ve never seen, so this Birthday he started my film education.

He gave me:
The graduate
Gone with the Wind
The Wild One

I enjoyed the graduate and recognised lots of the scenes (mostly from adverts!) but found the Dustin Hoffman character a bit irritating !!

I finished watching Gone with the Wind yesterday and loved it. I didn’t believe A. when he said it was 4 hours long :-) I sort of thought I wouldn’t enjoy it, but thought it was great…
