Eligible...and going ahead 2 years ago

I finally became eligible in June to become a Canadian citizen. I originally hadn’t taken into account all the time I had spent outside of Canada, which pushed things back a lot.

I wasn’t sure about whether or not I wanted to apply for a while, because I felt like I was perhaps getting my citizenship for the wrong reasons. I want to get it so I can move back to the U.S. if I want, but still be able to easily return to Canada.

So, I felt torn on what to do for a while. But, I’ve printed my application and I’m going to apply. I know my reasons might not be as honorable as others, but it’s why I’m doing it and I’m not going to make a big deal of it. I just want to get it and not have to worry about immigration crap ever again.

I went online and figured out my date. June 2007 I can apply.

I am currently a permanent resident of Canada, and will be eligible in Jan. 2007 to become a citizen. I am American, and even though I feel the US government sucks right now and I definitely prefer living in Canada, I think I’ll always identify myself as American. For a while, I thought I wouldn’t get my citizenship right away, because I figure we will live here for a while. But now I think I should. Just in case we ever move back to the U.S. or randomly to another country. Getting my permanent residency was a lot of paperwork and a lot money, and I don’t want to ever lose it. So, if I become a citizen then I have permanent legal status in Canada and I will get to be a citizen of 2 countries! Obviously this is a long term goal, but one that I shouldn’t get lazy about doing.
