But I’ve been pretty conscious of this so far, and need to stall my focus on this for a while.
Abandoned Account: See LJ Link has written 6 entries about this goal
Keeper. A compassionate lifestyle is accelerating my personal growth and saving the Earth while I’m at it.
It was such a “Duh” overnight decision for me. I definitely thought it out first; see my journal. (Link to journal & Compact info in entries right below; odyssey_spirit on Livejournal).
I don’t need to buy new. I need to simplify. I need to get rid of clutter and waste, ideally in ways that continue their usefulness with someone else.
I haven’t yet decided if how long I’ll do this; I’ll decide that when I have more planning time by Sunday.
I’m strongly considering The Compact… don’t know when or for how long. Can I start tomorrow?
My journal has more thoughts. http://odyssey-spirit.livejournal.com/63753.html

The Compact:”http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thecompact/”
A group of individuals committed to a 12-month flight from the consumer grid (calendar year 2008).
The Compact has several aims (more or less prioritized below):
- To go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture and to support local businesses, farms, etc. —a step that, we hope, inherits the revolutionary impulse of the Mayflower Compact.
- To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er).
- To simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)
They’ve agreed to follow two principles with a few exceptions.
#1 Don’t buy new products of any kind (from stores, web sites, etc.)
#2 Borrow, barter, or buy used.
_“We’re not out to be environmental martyrs. We’re just a group of folks looking to consciously reduce our consumption and keep trash out of the landfills.”
—Rachel Kesel, Compact member_
Other groups on the Compact have made the commitment to refuse buying new items, consumables aside, for a period of 2, 4, 6 or 12 months.
My next attempt will be to see if I can keep my computer off for ~12 hours of the day, instead of on all day.
brave new leaf blog might have some insight about the energy savings of this…
