I haven’t felt like I had the money to spare on much for the den, but in the last week have made two purchases that seemed like deals too good to pass up. One was a chair for the desk we have in there – it was on an incredibly deep discount and was so comfortable and only a fraction of the price of other new chairs we’d looked at (that were similar in style). The other was an item of local interest that we’ll frame and use to decorate the room.
It’s a step in the right direction!

We finished the floors, baseboards, everything I’ve been talking about, so now we’re on to the fun part: seeking out the perfect furniture to slowly fill the space the way we want it.
I saw an old sewing chest that I really liked the looks of at one of the local antique/used stores. If it’s still there after payday, I’m going to seriously consider buying it. Bit by bit it’s going to come together!
Since I last wrote, we got the flooring installed, as well as the T molding. Last night we sanded baseboards so that we can patch and paint them before re-attaching them, perhaps next weekend.
We’re also planning on how we’ll furnish the space after everything is done…but my husband and I seem to have different thoughts on how big the space is (read: he thinks there’s going to be room for more stuff than there actually will be).
So happy with how fast this is moving along now!
The online vendor for the flooring fell through because our project was too small, but I found a local company that nearly matched the price. We have the floor almost prepped. We’ve decided that a coat of Kilz will be a great last step to make sure that any remnants of the kitten ruining the floor will be left behind in this remodel.
We managed to ruin the carpet in our den, thanks to a sick kitten, in the first six months we lived in our house. We are FINALLY finding the energy and modest budget necessary (thanks, tax refund!) to tear out the carpet and replace it with laminate that will be friendlier to our lifestyle and match the rest of the floors.
That, my friends, is step one. And we kind of started step one tonight. We tore out the carpet, and I put in an order with the company with the best price for our flooring. Because of the shipping costs associated with flooring they’ll be contacting me to work out logistics, but a concrete floor is already preferable to the smelly old carpet. Hopefully this vendor will come through…Google seems to indicate that there is a warehouse in LA where I may be able to pick up the flooring from and save some cash.
Step two will be doing what we can to turn it into a room that is usable by humans, not just cats. One day this space will be our library, so we need to figure out how to cut down on the dust and ickiness now, to be prepared for when my beloved books take residence in there.
