1. on the road
I was listening to this one on CD and two of the discs got broken. For now, I’m moving on.
2. kafka on the shore
3. five little pigs
Agatha Christie mystery. What more to say?
4. the sum of our days
I especially appreciate the whole idea of wanting to live among your clan. But this seemed like a work she needed to push out for her publisher, rather than something inspired.
5. 100 years of solitude
6. sonichka and other stories
I enjoyed Ulitskaya’s collection
7. tropic of cancer
This novel was all hunger, sex, and relationships among the starved.
8. to the lighthouse
9. lullaby
Palahnuikesque
10. super crunchers
For someone with an interest in math / economics, but no background in it, it seems like Ayers’s work puts out a scant breadcrumb path of knowledge. Otherwise, it seems a bit obvious. Some of the particular cases he examines are interesting.
11. american pastoral
American Pastoral was good. I think parts of the beginning were sentimental (to the author?) and unnecessary to the story. But those may have been my favorite parts.
12. the third angel
Great work by Alice Hoffman, which gets better and better as the stories progress
13. Absolute Sandman Volume III
13. I like it. On to volume IV.
14. cry, the beloved country
amazing
15. big fish
Worth quitting a job over.
16. portrait of the artist as a young man (reread)
17. siddhartha
18. true history of the kelley gang
I read most of it, then set it aside (because of exams). I’ve tried to finish it since, but I can’t seem to get into it again.
19. goodbye, columbus
Excellent collection.
20. master and margarita
21. for the relief of unbearable urges
great collection!
22. how i paid for college: a novel of sex, theft, friendship and musical theater
Clever and entertaining, but the main character / narrator annoyed me. Still, I couldn’t help but like it in the end.
23. in the woods
24. all saints
25. heart shaped box
26. beloved
26. perfect.
27. the time traveler’s wife
Enjoyable read. (side.thought)The bulk of the fiction books I’ve read since stating this goal feature gorgeous women. I think it may be a blend of vicarious living with mild narcissism. Audrey Neiffenegger’s female lead, for example, is a very attractive redheaded artist – Neiffenegger herself is a visual artist and a redhead. / Are the mind and experiences of these women somehow more poignant given their aesthetics? Are adventures likelier to befall the stunning? I don’t resent them their beauty, but I’d like or dislike these women all the same without it.
28. end the fed
Rothbard (probably maybe) next. Then Velben. Keynes. And so on.
29. my life with turtles
recommended by my dad. a memoir by david m. carroll. now that I’ve started taking my daddio’s recommendations, perhaps I should read ‘my family and other animals’ by gerald durrell next
30. naked economics
Entertaining but the points weren’t new to me. I may read it anyway, it’s a good book. But I’m setting it aside for now.
31. Geography of Bliss
Loved it. Good read if you enjoy random facts and learning about people, places, brief philosophies, and the like.
33. divisadero
I enjoy Michael Ondaatje’s style. Slow like honey. And this book was a good length for something slow and introspective.
34. the magician’s nephew
Lackluster response from this little critic. I most liked the parts where the animals discover jokes.
35. all the o. henry short stories in my collection
36. guernsey literary and potato peel pie society
not memorable, but a good read
37. animal, vegetable, miracle
It was packed with rich and inspiring information, but I’d rather her husband have wrote it.
38. pilgrim at tinker creek
39. assassination vacation
Sarah Vowell rocks, period.
40. jewish literacy
41. harry potter and the half-blood prince
The best part about Harry Potter books, is getting absorbed into them.
42. harry potter and the deathly hallows
This one is way better than the Half Blood Prince. I like that most good characters are flawed in their goodness, and most bad characters are flawed in their badness. But I hate, hate, hate (SPOILER, SPOILER!) that Snape dies. Jeez. He was my favorite character. Maybe because he’s played by Alan Rickman.
43. shalimar the clown
Worth reading – especially the middle.
