A MAJOR ACHIEVEMENT IN AN OTHERWISE WOEFUL MONTH!!! 2 years ago

FYI: I finished the ceiling in the living and dining rooms late Thursday night (04/05/07). The interior of the house is painted – a job I set out to do many months ago is done! In the words of my sister, the place looks “crisp.” Along the way, I’ve done considerable “decluttering,” a process I expect to continue over the next several months.

I thought I’d feel a greater sense of accomplishment, but my spirits are flagging today. For starters, I’ve developed a whopping head cold. Moreover, I’m worried about my daughter, whose mental health issues are getting the better of her. As I’m unable to do much to help (she’s refusing to speak to me), I’m focusing on the things I can do, painting the house being one of them.

To celebrate the completion of this goal, I went to IKEA today and bought some new curtains for the living room. Nothing fancy, just some sheer white drapes with a pattern woven into them. (Boring, I know.)

Thanks to 43things.com for providing the incentive and inspiration to enable me to finish this long overdue chore.

catching up (redux) 2 years ago

Ta daaaa! I finished the downstairs bathroom Thursday. I painted over the yellow-orange color with a pale green called “Hazel Woods,” another understated hue from the Ralph Lauren Urban Loft palette. Rummaging about in the attic for something to complete the new look, I found a couple of nicely framed and matted water colors of Irises that my ex-wife bought at a yard sale. They still had the price tags on them – $4 each. The mats are virtually the same shade of green as the bathroom. They look pretty nice on the wall. Rescued art…gotta love it!

is finito!!! Slowly, I’m getting there…

Whew... 2 years ago

I primed the Great Wall today. My plan: to finish painting it by Saturday. I spent several minutes today pondering the cathedral ceiling above the living room, a daunting challenge. It’s about 15-feet high at the apex. I’m thinking that, in addition to the scaffold, it might be wise to rent an air compressor to spray the paint on, rather than apply it with a roller. Whatever. It’s too late to think about now. I’m tired.

one (paintbrush) stroke at a time... 2 years ago

Radiators done in a nice, crisp semi-gloss white. For those keeping score at home the color is Ralph Lauren Urban Loft Studio White (UL-41). This weekend I’m tackling the “Great Wall” that links the Living room and Dining room. Once that’s done, I’ll have only that cathedral ceiling to complete. The upstairs will then – finally – be done!!! All I’ll have left is the downstairs bathroom. Why am I telling you (Whoever you are?) all this excruciating detail. You can’t possibly be interested. God, I need a life.

on pace for May completion... 2 years ago

The prep work is done, and I’m ready to paint the radiators in the living room/dining room. Although some personal stuff has slowed me down in the last week, I’m still on pace for May completion of the upstairs. I’ve yet to do the downstairs bathroom. If I can get sufficiently motivated, I could whisk through that, perhaps as early as this weekend. I hope.

The Khaki kicks ass. I’m happy.

a horse (or wall) of another color... 2 years ago

The pale green didn’t work for me. I thought it would. I hoped it would. It just looked so anemic next to the color I chose for the kitchen, something called Lafayette from the R.L Urban Loft collection. (Oddly enough, it appears brownish-green or yellowish-green depending on the light.) So, I primed over the dining room wall today – the one I had painted just hours earlier – with some Kilz 2 Latex. (All of life’s mistakes should be so easily eradicated!) Tonight, I’m painting it a khaki green. Call me the interior desecrator!

yet another... 2 years ago

I downed a dining room wall today – painted it a very pale green, something called Hazel Woods from the R. Lauren Urban Loft palette. All that remains is the large wall that links the living room and dining room. And the aforementioned cathedral ceiling. If I can keep this pace up, I’ll be done by April. Does ayone know how to erect a scaffold?

Just for fun... 2 years ago

I primed and painted two walls in my living room today. That leaves two more – including one BIG one – and the dreaded cathedral ceiling. I’m aiming for completion in May, before the weather gets too hot.
