become a better chess player

I was on my high school chess team, but I sucked wind. A confession: I liked the idea of playing chess more than actually playing the game. (It was the 1970s and Bobby Fischer was all the rage, having beaten reigning Russian World Chess Champ Boris Spasky in a titanic battle in Reykjavik, Iceland.) A hapless geek bereft of athletic ability, I thought chess would make me cool. I have a few battered chess books lying aound the house somewhere. It might be fun to learn the game. At the very least it’ll be a hobby I can fall back on when I’m too feeble to move about without a walker or eat solid food.
