Volunteering! — 1 month ago
I got a call last week from a woman with the Obama campaign, and she invited me to volunteer. Since Friday, I have registered 7 people to vote! I’m pretty excited to help people become more involved with the government.
I think that it’s sad we live in a society where only 50% of the population votes. It makes me sad that more people don’t feel empowered to take government into their own hands…that’s why I’m volunteering.
On Saturday while I was at a family gathering, I mentioned that I was helping people register to vote and a neighbor said that she wanted to register. She’s 80 years old and had never really voted.
Also, my brother (who’s fairly anti-establishment and anti-convention) heard that I was doing this and decided to register to vote today for the first time ever at the age of 28.
I don’t want to get too exited when people register to vote (because I don’t want to scare people away, I guess…), but it makes me want to jump for joy that people who would normally not even care about being involved in the process are really excited to sign up.
So, I feel like I’m doing a good thing for my community and my country. If you can, I would suggest finding a local campaign to volunteer with.
