This is going so so badly 5 months ago

My languaged obsessed boy might actually know more phrases than me, this feels wrong in so many ways. So to take ownership of my other language, I plan to watch as many Korean dramas and films as possible. By the way, Korean cinema is brilliant! I’ve just scoured a site full of them and they’re so arty and accomplished. Anyway I’m starting on one called Palace, which is an utterly absurd story of love triangles in a fictional fairytale kingdom, sounds like bliss to me! Also I start my part time job next week so i’ll have the time to properly start to memorise some phrases other than hello/goodbye/thankyou/I don’t understand.

A few weeks ago 12 months ago

I entered (thanks to the fabulous Lucyann2) a competition to win a return flight to Korea. Well I won that flight but didn’t pin my hopes too high in case it turned out to be one of those ‘too good to be true’ sort of happenings. Well it is too good to be true, so much so that it is true! Wahey! The paperwork came today and it looks like I will be jetting off to my ‘other’ home sometime in the next year. BRILLIANT! I can’t quite believe it. All this talk of speeding up destiny is paying off in more ways than I can imagine. I was hoping they might give me two flights so the afore mentioned fabulous Lucyann2 could come with me, she did after all find the competition, enter it herself then forward it to me. I feel slightly bad that I have taken away a potential holiday from someone, obviously I will be bringing back something equally fabulous for her.

It turns out that I can go for as long as I want, there is no limit to the time I spend out there so I am thinking about going for Easter. I work in a university so I’m not strictly allowed to have holidays in term time but we have three weeks off at Easter so that’s pretty damn good and I’m sure they can manage without me for a further one or two weeks either side which means I could be looking at a 5 week holiday and only have to take 6 days leave entitlement, not bad eh?

Anyway I should get cracking with this learn korean goal I guess as it will help a lot because I want to travel around the country a bit and go to my old village Jinhae which is especially important because it will be cherry blossom season while I’m there where folk from all over Korea travel to just to see.

I ordered a book 14 months ago

and cd to kickstart this goal into action. I also ordered a book which is for ethnic koreans who were brought up outside of Korea and want to go visit. There’s apparently a divide for Koreans who didn’t live there, which I’m not too shocked at as they seem to be known for their social segregations and class systems. It’s quite interesting though.

Oooh 2 years ago

I’ve started working for the regional language network and they’ve agreed to lend me an MP3 player and some podcasts in Korean, i’m excited.

My friend D 2 years ago

with the fabulous hair who goes out with D has found me a Korean man who was an ex student of hers and I’m meeting him tomorrow. He emailed me rather excitedly, I like that he’s excited cos I am too, he also rewrote the entire email in Korean so I could see what it looked like. He seems lovely. I had the chance to meet him today with some of his Korean friends to have Korean food, but I couldn’t make it, and now I’m sad that I missed out on Kimchi.

I have decided to learn Korean 2 years ago

properly. For some reason or other, I knew I would learn it eventually, but I have really been thinking about it a lot lately. Probably because I’ve been researching Japan a lot lately and it’s made me think about my own heritage. I’d really love to learn more about where I’m from, it’s a fascinating country and I feel a spiritual connection to the place, and remember it vividly even though I was only there for a short while when I was a child.

I bought one of those insight guides on the place and already it’s filled in some gaps from my childhood, like why my mother wasn’t allowed to leave the country and why I always called older children the same name. I’ve also learnt they have a kite fighting festival which I think is just brilliant, and I’ve managed to convince my boy to come with me for an extended stay next year.

Obviously I’m insanely stressed with all my book folding at the moment but once it’s done I’m going to start by getting an audio language course to familiarise myself with the language again. Yay!
