FreeCycle.org has the official word, but I call it bargain-basement philanthropy. You go through your closets, your garage, your shed, your attic, whathaveyou, and give stuff away to deserving requesters who will use them. So that old set of dishes from college? Someone can and will use them: let them. That exercise equipment? Same deal. Why allow it to take up space in your mind and your home? Let it torment someone else . . .
You can even take in stuff and make it better: I gave away a couple of beat up but serviceable bikes last week to people who want to become one less car. Had to make some small repairs, buy a few parts, but I think it’s worth doing.
