My wife just took a class in starting non-profits, so we’ve got lots of data, forms, procedures, etc. I think we have a pretty good handle on how to do it, now. Scary, but not horrible.

But now we’re seriously considering if we should start our own at all. It’s looking more and more like we would be better off to be part of some other organization.

Basically, the goal of our non-profit is to encourage theaters to produce musicals by new writers. Pretty clear.

But, that means finding good new writers, which means looking at their work and evaluating it, which means receiving scripts and CDs and reading/listening to it. I’ve heard that other organizations (NAMT, NYMF, SPF, Larsen) which do this receive receive around 300-400 submissions per year. That’s a lot of work.

So maybe we should piggyback on an organization which is already reviewing musicals, and then just provide extra funding for theatrical productions for the ones that win (or use their vetting process for the “first cut” – after which we make our own decision).

Hmmmm….

Next step – interview artistic and executive directors at theaters to see if our plan will be of interest to them.
