Poor birds 2 years ago

My chickens finally made some chicks. Cutest crap I’ve ever seen. Then one day I went to check on them and they were dead. Something had dug under the wall and killed them. Nasty sight to find with my kids. So I will try this again once we can bury the chicken wire further in the ground.

What?! 5 roosters!!! 2 years ago

Ok, so the chickens are all grown up. lol. And it turns out that 5 of them were roosters. Man. My dear hubby helped us out by taking 4 of those and dumping them in the forest somewhere. Humane? Not sure. So now we have 3 hens and 1 gorgeous rooster. I get about 3 eggs a day now and can’t eat them fast enough. And yes, the eggs are quite good. I want to try to let them hatch out a brood, maybe in the spring.

Almost time for eggs! 3 years ago

I have been getting eggs from my neighbor. They seem to have a never ending supply. I think one of their roosters has come over for a visit. My 8 chickens are getting bigger and smarter. They know when I come out to pen them up after a day of free-ranging. And they do not cooperate at all. I figure another few weeks and we will have our own egg supply. Oh, and they are not so cute anymore, now that the coop has started to stink. I rake it out often, but they are simply poop factories. The heat and humidity of South Georgia does not help either.

Where's the eggs! 3 years ago

Ok, I know they won’t lay for a while. The chickens are so fun to watch. We adopted 6 from our neighbors, who now have like 30 chickens in all ages. I think we did them a favor, they have so many chicks! Anyway, they peck at the ground and occasionally at each other, and seem pretty content in the coop. My dear hubby built a nice chicken house for them. I can’t wait to see if we have any Roosters in the bunch. Anyone know how to tell them apart?

OK, here we go... 3 years ago

This hen just showed up in our yard one day. Then she made a nest right by our house and laid eggs. 10 of em. We went on vacation and came back to the chicken sitting on the eggs. Then about a week ago, there were three little chicks following momma around and totally tearing up the pine straw around the house. They are so cute! So now we have 2 chicks in our old kitty kennel and I am off tomorrow to get their food and stuff. Yay!!! My kids are gonna be so excited when they see the chicks. It turns out that the neighbors cousin brought him the hen to keep, but she got out and took up roost at our place, she would go visit the rooster every day! lol. Well, the cousin came back tonight to get the chicken out of our hair and we kept the babies. Couldn’t find one of them, hope I can in the morning, the night shouldn’t be that cold…..
