Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

petrnotail in Baltimore is doing 34 things including…

listening to records instead of watching television

11 cheers

petrnotail has written 4 entries about this goal

no tv, no record player

So, I guess the ultimate goal of watching less television was accomplished.

an important component

to this goal is the tv in the morning. in our old apartment, i used to get up and turn on CNN and watch it while I got ready. i would then spend the rest of the day fretting over world crises beyond my control/sphere of influence. but now, instead of being well-informed by the corporate drivel news, I am just reading the paper on my lunch break (also corporate crap, but what isn’t these days?) and listening to records in the morning.

I skipped the morning walk in favor of tidying the kitchen while listening to Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys and then Teen Dream by Beach House (best record of 2010 thus far btw—you should get it.)

I tend to arrive to work non-vomitous and happy and relaxed. The news does bad things to me, but reading makes me happy, so I am reading the news in hopes it won’t upset so much. Hopefully, I can keep this up.

a selection of late

in the aeroplane over the sea
the best of the animals
tea for the tillerman

this goal could be under the making the most of (the rest of) my twenties category

but it’s not because it needs special emphasis. i am about to put on side 2 of beauty and the beat and thinking of what fun i had last night with mr. petrnotail and our friend dave, as we sat on the couch and talked and listened to records. last night was sparks, the rolling stones, lou reed and some 16th century organ music.

petrnotail has gotten 11 cheers on this goal.
