I’ve been fluent in Japanese for a few years now, so I’ve even stopped thinking about studying and I just speak now.
I bought an iPhone about a year ago now, and when I see what is possible nowadays, I think it’s likely so much easier to learn Japanese faster than ever before.
Japanese, beyond grammar and listening, is vocabulary, vocabulary, and more vocabulary. The old textbooks I used to lug around are nothing compared to what’s available on the iPhone nowadays.
And yes, it’s a shameless plug, but I was so passionate about that I even wrote flashcard software to study with 2 friends. Find our work here:
I agree with the last post: simply move to Japan. Get whatever visa you have to, just get over here, and then work out the rest from inside the country. There are plenty of resources all over the web.
However, the idea of getting a girlfriend or boyfriend to help you learn is a little questionable. Isn’t that like using them as a resource/being used as one? I like a girlfriend who likes me for me, not because she wants to practice English.
