become a journalist

Ok well I just finished a 3 week unpaid internship at a newspaper, which led to a casual paid position to write a fourteen piece series of stories on all the surf clubs in my local area, including two front pages. From this experience I can definately see the value of going and volunteering at regional papers. If you do an internship try to pitch good ideas at the news meetings rather than just sit there and let the full time journos do it. That’s how I got my series, if I hadn’t pitched anything I wouldn’t have gotten the paid position. So I’m pretty happy with how I’m going right now. Since that position is now over I’ve gotta pull it all together and add it to my portfolio and go out to look for more experience!

Well, I’m in my second year of Combined Law and Communications (majoring in journalism), thus far I’ve had some work published in street press and student magazines most of which I’ve found something wrong with or am no longer satisfied enough about to include in a resume.
I’m about to start a 3 week internship at my local regional newspaper in a few weeks, so at least that’s something I guess…
I’ll start trying to line up other places soon I think.
