i recently learned two interesting entertainment tidbits:
- Richard Day (creator of Arrested Development) is adapting the British series The Thick of It for US tv. so something to follow in the steps of The Office i guess.
- Bill Lawrence (creator of Scrubs) has created a new show with two other writers called Nobody’s Watching.
and the other thing: movies are going green by doing the carbon balancing act. apparently this is nothing really new, but i was glad to hear about it.

as it turns out, my husband rented this. or tried to. he ordered it, but they sent The Godfather Part II instead, so we watched that.
It was impressive, and I really liked it. I was expecting a story of mob violence akin to Scarface, but found instead more of a historical account of how a mafia family evolved in the US. I’ll definitely be renting the others now as well. :)

some news i learned this week:
Nicole Kidman will be playing Mrs. Coulter in The Golden Compass (aka Northern Lights) by Phillip Pullman. good choice in my book.
and Heath Ledger has been cast as the Joker for The Dark Knight (clearly a set up for The Dark Knight Returns, right?), which is the sequel to Batman Begins. I’m not sure how I feel about this. I don’t think he can top Jack Nicolson’s performance. I really enjoyed Batman Begins though, so perhaps Christopher Nolan knows what he’s doing…

My Lover Sea
by Reinaldo Arenas
_I am that child
with the round, dirty face
who on every corner bothers you with his
“Can you spare a quarter?”_
_I am that child with the dirty face,
no doubt unwanted,
that from far away contemplates coaches
where other children
emit laughter and jump up and down considerably_
_I am that unlikeable child
definitely unwanted,
with the round dirty face
who before the giant street light or
under the grandames also illuminated
or in front of the little girls that seem to levitate
projects that insult of his dirty face_
_I am that angry and lonely child of always,
that throws you the insult and warns you:
if hypocritically you pat me on the head
I would take that opportunity to steal your wallet_
_I am that child of always
before the panorama of imminent terror
imminent leprosy, imminent fleas,
of offenses and the imminent crime._
_I am that repulsive child that improvises a bed
out of an old cardboard box and waits,
certain that you will accompany me_
...............

new show on channel USA. it’s pretty funny and it’s got a great spot between Monk and House (also good shows). I’ll probably keep an eye on it.
there’s also an ad at the show’s site for a show called Eureka on the Scifi channel:
Shrouded in secrecy, the picturesque hamlet [(Eureka)] is actually a community of scientific geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research.[!]
the Californian Eurekans must be loving this.
I want to write for tv.

Leo DiCaprio Turning On, Tuning In For Timothy Leary Biopic
June 29, 2006
By Tatiana Siegel
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to turn on, tune in and drop out for his next project. The actor’s Appian Way shingle has tapped Obie-winning playwright Craig Lucas and Timothy Leary archivist Michael Horowitz to develop a biopic on the counterculture icon as a possible starring vehicle.
DiCaprio, who knew Leary before his death in 1996, has been looking to develop a film on the LSD advocate for several years. The film will focus on Leary’s life between his enrollment at West Point in the early 1940s and his escape from prison in 1970.

Jeff Buckley: The Movie
06/29/2006 4:00 PM, Yahoo! Music News
A movie about legendary rock star Jeff Buckley is being made, according to reports. Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert is understood to be working on the biopic, following the tragic death of her son in 1997.
Guibert is expected to produce the movie, which is being written and directed by Brian Jun. There is currently no information about who will play Buckley.
Speaking about the plans, Guibert said she had been inspired by the success and integrity of recent music biopics such as Ray and Walk The Line.
She commented: “Over the years, the number of offers were unceasing. I had resisted for so many reasons, one being that Hollywood, traditionally, did a lousy job of realistically portraying the life of people like Jeff. But the possibility that it could happen without my participation set me back to re-examine why I wasn’t doing it.”
Jeff Buckley released just one official LP, Grace, before drowning in 1997 at the age of 30.
there’s a pretty good book that relates to this called God-Shaped Hole by Tiffanie Debartolo, who incidently directed that great movie, Dream For an Insomniac.
