Success! 3 years ago

This was very fun. Meeting locals definitely gave us a better perspective on Montréal, and we managed to learn a whole heap about Canadian politics as well. And Emacs. And the history of the Plateau district. And video games. And linguistics. And recommended dive bars in the area. I believe various forms of suicide were also discussed, but only in the third person; everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Beforehand, La Cabane was either amused or annoyed when I had to tell them that 32 people had RSVP’d for the gathering, but since it was over the internet, I actually expected anywhere between zero and twenty of them to show. I think we got a dozen locals visiting over the course of the evening, which ain’t too shabby. They all seemed smart, earnest, politically aware, and fun…which is a pretty good set of attributes to bring to a meeting of strangers. Here’s who made it, in order of appearance. Cool peeps!

Well, Lori and I have already managed to see two other places named La Cabane while wandering around Montréal. So just to clarify: tonight’s meetup is at La Cabane on St. Laurent, right across the street from Schwartz’s. 3872 St. Laurent. We stopped by yesterday and let them know we’d need some space, so they know we’re coming. Stop by anytime from 6:00 until…whenever. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Details 3 years ago

What: Meetup with other 43 Things users
When: Saturday, March 25th, 6:00 PM until ??
Where: La Cabane (map)
Who: At the very least, Lori and Todd. Hopefully many more.

In case you’re the first to arrive and want to recognize our party, I’ve attached an image of how we might look in your snowy urban environment, at least if we were both idealized, cartoon versions of ourselves. Lori’s easy to spot because her glasses have vintage cat’s eye frames (not pictured). Stop by and say hi!

Step one: find a venue 3 years ago

I sent a few messages to Montréal folks through 43 People and got a great recommendation for a venue. Apparently, it is casual, has plenty of space, is centrally located, and appeals to a wide range of tastes. Next step is to send the mass message to Montreal locals and see what kind of response I get.
