I wish I liked chewing gum 19 months ago
For me, biting my fingers seems to have two main aspects:
  1. Get rid of rough dry skin patches (which of course are made worse by biting them, but it’s so hard to stop)
  2. Have something to chew on

Aspect #2 would be so much easier to quit if I liked chewing gum! But I’ve always found it gross… Strange that somehow biting myself is less gross to me than chewing synthetic chemical rubber. Addictions are weird.

I did pretty well yesterday though.

A mini-goal: I’d like my fingers to be mostly healed by Memorial Day weekend, when I’ll be spending the weekend waterskiing. It’ll be much more pleasant if my fingers don’t hurt!

I’m thankful that they’re not too bad, especially compared to many of the photos everyone else showed.



Wish it wasn't so grossly addictive 20 months ago

I’ve only started biting the skin around my nails over the past year, since graduating from college and getting an office job. Dry skin and boredom started it, but it has definitely become a compulsion. The rough, red, ragged skin is sooooooo embarrassing, both in my professional and personal life!

Thank you to everyone who posted so honestly—as you all said, it’s great to know we’re not alone in this crazy habit.

I WILL kick this!
