Yesterday was my first day, and I’ve got a schedule set up. I can finally count this done! (Although of course the volunteering will be ongoing)

Because of technology issues, this whole process has been moving at a snail’s pace. But I finally had my “interview” last week, and this week I’ll go to a group volunteer orientation. Then, finally, I’ll start working in the glasshouse on Sunday mornings!
Over the weekend, I finally heard back from the botanical garden volunteer coordinator. She sent a flyer and an application, which I’ve returned. Now all that’s left is hearing back from her!
This weekend, while my parents were here, we visited the botanical garden. I “ambushed” a volunteer and asked her if she might know why the volunteer coordinator hadn’t responded to my 2-week-old email (also explained that I have trouble breaking away to make personal phone calls during the workday). She was surprised I hadn’t heard back, and offered to leave my contact info on the right person’s desk!
I can’t wait to volunteer somewhere in my area for tons of reasons—for starters, it’ll help worthwhile organizations, and add some much-needed variety to my life.
I’ve narrowed down a few possibilities:- Habitat for Humanity I deeply admire Habitat’s mission—not only does it build homes for families in need, but it requires them to take responsibility by volunteering time to their project and others’ projects, and by repaying the mortgage for their home (low-cost, no interest).
- The local botanical garden My parents have always had beautiful gardens; of course I didn’t appreciate them fully until I moved away. I’d love to get hands-on gardening experience while helping this beautiful nonprofit.
- The local art museum I began college as an art major (switched majors later as so many do), and I still love art. My local museum is in the midst of renovations, so they might not have many opportunities available; on the other hand, they may need lots of help to set everything back up!
My goal is to set up a volunteering schedule for one of these by the end of May. I’ve already tried to contact all three organizations, but for various reasons, nothing’s come of it yet. Time to really get to work!
