Did my own acoustics report 5 months ago

Bought a sound level logger, measured levels in the office and the lab, put these in a little report, along with standards for comparable workplaces to show just how far outside acceptable limits this place is. – then sent it to bossman. I wonder if this stone will make any ripples?

After trying everything to beat the noise, I’ve found that nothing works nearly as well as going nocturnal. I’ve got a list of times that aircon goes off, and those are the times I’ll work.

noise cancelling headphones actually work pretty well. Not what I want to wear all the time, but definitely better than earplugs. Moving to a quieter office helped, but it’s still not good enough.

I actually find earplugs quite distracting. They feel fine in my ears, and they block the sound pretty well – what distracts me is the little noises from my own mouth/head. Maybe noise canceling headphones that fit around my ear rather than in it would work better…

doing a little better. working on weekends, spending more time in the quieter office or working at home, invested in earplugs – might try earmuffs, or noise canceling headphones.. no point complaining – there’s no-one to fix it, and even if there was it wouldn’t get fixed.

trouble is, now I associate the sudden quiet when the aircon switches off at 6:30 with getting hungry and wanting to go home, rather than being the ideal time to do things that require quiet thinking – or audio recording

first go at working at night to avoid the noise is not working too well. Isolation is not so good for focused attention when ones mental health is in freefall.
