Downfall 4 years ago

A movie about the last moments of the 3rd Reich and Hitlers days as a megalomaniac. An excellent movie showcasing the fanaticall and sometimes obsessive approach toward the “nationalism” these people adquired. Showed withing the typicall context of the casualties of war that we’ve seen so many times in films like “Saving private Ryan”. The difference is that we’re not here to see the violence, that element just encapsulates the crazyness of it all. It’s about the people that where involved and how each experienced the downfall. There’s a woman, the wife of Hitlers second in command, that when asked why she has chosen to reamain in Berlin after being attacked, with children and all, responds that a future without nationalism is pointless, her childrens future is not a future worth living if all of what she believes in is over. The drastic measures taken by a lot of those involved gives way to the films most shocking moments. And finally, the humanized way of representing hitler is not done in a way that we symphatize with him, there’s no justifying what he did. The film just humanizes him in a way that he isnt a demon hell bent on world domination either. He was just missing a couple of screws in the head. If he we’re alive today he would just be sleeping in the streets shouting at people to believe in his ways. Or a simple ol’ cult leader. Nothing more.

Things Change 4 years ago

The only bad thing about this task is that the IMDB.com top 100 changes every now and then. I just watched one of the newest ones on the IMDB list “Oldboy” but it’s not on the Top 100 anymore (it was when I included this task in my 43 things) at least Forrest Gump got on the list so.. 30 films to go.

Oldboy is a tragedy much like those from greek literature & mythology where there’s not necesarily a villain just people in a context where nobody wins. Full with gore, violence, automutilation, incest, torture, this movie is a handfull, but a positively shocking one. The third act will keep you in the edge of your seat. Simply put its about Oh Daesu and his quest for answers when he is misteriously captured for 15 years and stranger yet, let go. Asking the wrong questions, he wont like what the answers are.

31 MORE TO GO!! 4 years ago

Just watched the Manchurian Candidate, so far all the movies I’ve seen have been totally worth it. This is a movie with shocking moments, most with violence and dealing with the whole socialist thing, slight undertones of incest and suicide, I bet it was very daring to make this movie in 1962. i wonder what Frankenheimer would have done if the movie was made like a decade later with more liberties. His use of camera is also very cool, I think his skills are almost on par with Hitchcock, Kurosawa and Welles (camera & framing wise), those that tried not just to capture a story, but present it in a different way, and with a good story such as this one, you can’t loose.

It's a wonderful film 4 years ago

32 left.. almost there :)

Just finished watching it’s a wonderful life… it’s okay I guess, I like the “What If…?” factor involved in the film and how it expresses that our actions can go a long way.

Value life children.. I guess that’s also what many of us are doing in this website.

Crash 4 years ago

33 films to go… the good thing about most top 100 films is that they are usually good. Crash was no exception, even if the only theme in the movie is racism, it needed just a tad bit of lightness. Excellent performances by the whole ensmble.

Bring on the next movie!!!!!

City of God 4 years ago

We can scratch that one from the list, very gritty & impacting, Mereilles sure knows his stuff, he’s like the Guy Ritchie (sans swept away) from Brazil, plus the fact that it was based on true events gives the film much more weight.

34 films to go… next up, crash.

Which ones I haven't seen. 4 years ago

The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Rear Window, City of God, Once upon a time in the west, Lawrence of Arabia, It’s a wonderful Life (and to think I have it on VHS somewhere in my house), Apocalypse Now, The Pianist, Paths of Glory, To Kill a Mockingbird, M, Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, Bridge on the River Kwai, Crash, Modern Times, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, 12 angry men, All About eve, Ragin Bull, Downfall, The Sting, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Manchurian Candidate, City Lights, The Apartment, On The Waterfront, The Great Escape, The Seventh Seal, Touch of Evil, The Great Dictator, Strangers on a Train, Oldboy, High Noon.

35 out of a 100, me thinks that’s not so bad.

I promise Ill soon watch A wonderful life and Crash which I have borrowed. Next up, M & City of god when they arrive from blockbuster.com.
