it’s not like quitting smoking or drinking where to practice the habit, you have to go buy something, it’s always there with you.
But it’s been roughly two years now since the day I decided to stop. I never had any wish to stop cracking my knuckles before then but one day I was working my summer job at the time as a movie theatre projectionist (lots of minute work with my fingers), and the big knuckle on my right index finger hurt all day and felt as though it were in the “post-pop” stage. Coming to realize that it could possibly be arthritis (although unlikely), I decided I didn’t want a hook for my trigger finger. I figured it was time to stop, and cold turkey.
The ache to pop goes away very, very slowly over a period of several months, and I know if I try I could still do it. The worst is when I accidently hit my hand on my desk or something and they pop on their own.
