I keep several houseplants in my room. . . It’s a hobby I just started this year to help relieve stress, ya know, watering them, clipping them, watching them grow. . . it can be very therapeutic.
But lately I realized that teeny tiney little brown flies have been showing up all around my plants, and at first I thought some dead animal must’ve been in the dirt I bought from the store! (seriously). But after doing some online research, I found out the flies are actually fungus gnats, which appear when the soil is too moist and causes certain roots to decay.(They’re attracted to decaying matter).
Having read they also multiply extremely quickly, there is now a small swarm of these little things zipping around my room and around my head as I type- I pause occasionally to swat. . . them.
The All-Knowing Internet has told me that the cause of this problem is that I have been overwatering my plants, because the flies lay their eggs in swampy soil. I had no idea that I was overwatering my plants, though, because they seemed to be doing so well. . .
Anyway, these flies are driving me crazy and I’m going to the store to get some special fly paper for gnats that is suggested online and that should take care of them until the soil in the pots dries out, which is apparently the ultimate solution to this nightmare. And this will take time.
Then after that’s taken care of, I need to write a paper for English class and do some other school things. . . And maybe after all that I relax. . .
