New thinking — 1 month ago
It looks like it is going to be more of a process through a procession of works to become less derivative. That means more work, but less thought.
How will I know when the goal has been achieved?

It seems hard to stop thinking like an illustrator- always coming up with obvious visual solutions to concepts rather than presenting an idea that a viewer is expected to explore. Painters paint to make the point of raising questions visually, and for the sheer expressive energy. Trying to wear both hats is very, very hard.
It could be that the best way to approach new painting is to move in an entirely different direction. That’s why I’m leaning toward performance art and soft sculpture as ways to ease into getting involved with newer concepts.
I do like the California lowbrow movement, but there aren’t many new adherents here. There are many followers of the trail-blazers, and it’s hard to take sometimes. (Not that everyone can pioneer an art movement, but if there’s obvious derivation, at least there should be some acknowledgment of influence, and an attempt to build on or expand upon the origin.)
