Hubby and I have gotten some extra cash for Christmas and various things over the year and made some good size extra payments. We’ll have been in the house two years in another couple weeks, and we’ve paid the equivalent of about 10 1/2 years’ worth of the mortgage payments, going by the amount of principal left. Woohoo! We figure we’ve saved $12,000 in interest!

We took out the 30 year mortgage, knowing that we could definitely make the payments (they are smaller than our rent was!) but that we would definitely pay it off early.
The last few months we’ve been making about a payment and a half, and it has already made a difference – we’re a year ahead of schedule! And we hope we can put more toward it after things like Christmas and tax refunds.
