Just in case you're wondering... 2 years ago

...how I’m managing to consume so many movies at the moment, I’m super sick right now. Not very good at all. Lucky I’m just waiting around for bureaucracy to complete it’s process, and don’t actually have anything to do right now.

:-(

Hero 2 years ago

I saw this – I don’t remember if I added it, or if Jenna added it. Anyway, this was one of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen. Absolutely stunning. Visual masterpiece – my eyes were hardly worthy. The soundtrack is perfect as well.

It appears that it was pretty windy in China 2000 years ago – their hair is always blowing around whilst they are fighting ;-)

I thought the story was actually a bit weak, and in some places I found it a bit difficult to follow. The concept for the story was OK I guess, but the execution was a little poor IMHO. However, the stunning camera and scene work more than made up for it.

Based on the visuals and soundtrack alone I recommend it.

Battle Royale 2 years ago

Ah, the Japanese. Great electronics, crazy english translation, even crazier movies – well, that’s not usually true, but Battle Royale is certainly one of the crazier Japanese movies I’ve seen. It has more blood that Zatoichi, and it certainly more Japanese (although that’s an odd comment, given Zatoichi was about a Samurai – hmmm), Anyway, I enjoyed this movie – it’s certainly action packed. The only part which annoyed me a bit is some of the dialogue – it’s very stereotypical of what I would expect Japanese early teen conversation to be – but I guess the movie is about Japanese teens. Maybe I was expecting too much in the dialogue front – or perhaps it was a case of engrish on the translation. Anyway, I liked it.

And now there’s only 46 left on the list.

Couple of movies on the weekend 2 years ago

I watched Last Days and The Dinner Game (aka Le Dîner de cons).

Last Days was the most boring movie I’ve ever watched. Most boring EVER. Boring. I was so bored.

The Dinner Game was much better. I watched the french with english subtitles version. It was a bit of a cheesy comedy, but clever cheesy. I really enjoyed it actually.

Jenna claims that she didn’t add Last Days to the list, that it was an addition from me. Perhaps that’s right. I can’t blame her for wasting 97 minutes of my life.

Adaptation 2 years ago

Very clever movie. I enjoyed it, but only for the concept of the movie, and the cleverness that was used in unfolding what the movie was actually about.

Kung-Fu Hustle 2 years ago

Got this out yesterday (I also hired The Experiment and Ripleys Game – so they’ll be watched soon).

This movie is fantastic. I don’t believe I’ve ever laughed at a single movie so much. It was the cheesy lines, and ridiculous stereotypes that made me laugh. There is some mighty impressive fighting (as you’d expect), and some astounding special effects.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this – and recommend it to all. I wouldn’t say it’s a good introductory movie to the martial arts genre (because of the westernised cheesy-ness – it might give you the wrong impression for the rest of the genre), but if you’re into that scene it’s great.

Deliverance 2 years ago

Oh dear. Do places and people like that really (still) exist?!

Disturbing. Anyway, the film was OK. It was (again) a classic that I thought I should see. We were discussing it at work earlier, and now my teamleader has an mp3 of duelling banjos as his ringtone.

What did I like about the movie…? Hmmm, I think it was how the characters developed, and showed their true colours under the pressure and stress of the situation they were in. I thought the director pulled it off well.

I also liked the camerawork on the river, I guess it would have been technically challenging, and I definately appreciate that.

hmmm, I’m not really feeling like writing much now… That’ll be it for today I think.

Lord of the Flies - Peter Brook (1963) 2 years ago

Just saw this movie, I’m really making an effort to power thru Jennas list. Going quite well so far I think.

Anyway, this movie had the 2nd most boring intro ever, the first being the 4mins+ of black screen that comes with 2001: A Space Odyssey. The movie itself was alright I guess, for 1963. The cinematography was OK, Peter Brook managed to portray the savagery of the boys quite well, especially in the nighttime scenes. The fast camera work, shots of fire sparks, all the noise and blurry shots added to the atmosphere.

One thing I loved was how english they were at the start of the movie. The language is what I find particularly interesting. It’s the same as the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis – all very old sounding. I grew up reading that sort of stuff, and I just like the idea of that sort of “proper” behaviour.

I haven’t actually read William Goldings book that the movie was based on, I somehow managed to skip that at school. Maybe that’ll have to be my February book

Only 53 movies left to see. I should be able to close out another three by this Saturday.

Taxi Driver 2 years ago

I went to the movie store today and found that I can get 5 older DVDs hired for $10 for 1 week, so I got 5 out. Lots of movie watching this week…

Anyway, I went to a friends place for dinner tonight, and after that we watched Taxi Driver. 1974, Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, Jodie Foster, Martin Scorsese directed it. It was quite a good movie, I’d give it a 3.5/5. I felt the end of the movie seemed to come very quickly. The progression from him only being slighly bizarre, to full on angry man seemed to come very quickly. It was certainly building throughout the movie, but then all of a sudden he got very hard core.

The dust jacket promised lots of violence (not that I’m really into that) but I expected a longer, more drawn out period of him cleaning up the streets of NYC.

I really liked the way De Niros character would sit back and let the other characters do the talking, and move the story along – like when he was talking to Matthew about hiring Iris (Foster), he didn’t do that much talking – there was lots of looking and (you could tell) thinking on his part, but not that much talking. I also enjoyed his confidence in asking Betty (?) (Shepherd) out. It was quite funny, and then the conversation in the coffee shop about the other guy at the campaign office.

I’d watch it again.

Twin Peaks - Season 1 2 years ago

Finished! But I’m pretty upset about the whole situation. For a start, I missed the last 1/4 of episode 6, as the DVD had a fault and it just wouldn’t play – I even tried multiple players. My other complaint (which isn’t really a complaint at all) is that now I just want to watch season 2! That show is so very good.

High rating. I’m super impressed. Kyle MacLachlan is fantastic as Agent Dale Cooper. Although I’ve got some questions about the show – I’m after some public opinion on them…

  • What’s the significance of coffee in the show? Is it important at all, or is it just a drink?
  • What is the significance of the soap opera “Invitation to love”?

I find it very difficult to understand underlying themes and social commentary in movies/tv shows. I need a bit of help.
