What in the world is the lectionary?

The lectionary is a three-year program that divides the Bible into short passages for study, preaching, or teaching. Over the three-year cycle, most of the Bible is presented for study. Typically, the lectionary includes four passages each week, one from the Old Testament, one from the Psalms, one from the Gospels, and one from the Epistles. Many weeks, the readings from each of the sections are related somehow, and some of the joy of reading the lectionary faithfully and prayerfully is recognizing how supposedly disparate passages from the Bible relate to one another.
I hope to read and pray the revised common lectionary daily for one complete three year cycle.
