March experience 20 months ago

Today I turned in an application package for another job. It is for a position within a different arm of the same organization for which I currently work. It is a job for which I believe I am well-qualified. It is in an area where I once worked many years ago, and was regarded as an expert in my field at that time.

If selected, I anticipate that upper management will probably offer me more money to take the new job. Probably not tons more, but a reasonable amount.

So why am I not overly enthused about it?

I love what I am doing right now. I love the people with whom I work. This is the best organization for which I have ever worked. I enjoy it so much most days that it seems almost unfair to call it work. It’s the kind of job where even though you put a lot of work into it, you enjoy it so much that you almost feel guilty collecting a paycheck for it.

So why would I even consider leaving?

Well the future viability of our organization is unclear. As people leave they are not being replaced. Upper management has been sending signals that when our current big project is completed (in about a year from now) that we will be disbanded.

I don’t relish the thought of leaving, but I am of the opinion that if there is another good opportunity out there that I would be crazy to not consider it at this point in time.

But whether I ultimately end up leaving or staying, I view this as a good opportunity to shop myself around and let people know that I am available. I took myself off of that circuit several years ago when I first took my current position.

I started a program of regularly going to the gym. I’ve been going with a friend, so that makes it more fun and is a good motivating force.
