I feel guilty in bragging about this goal, however, when I wrote this goal I hadn’t read the bible in a long time, and waited a few more days to start. Today I read several chapters and am so lifted by this experience. It’s not that I have strayed away from God, I have just had no desire to delve into the Word as of late.
My plan for this is to read 5 chapters in the OT, 5 in the NT, and 1 Psalm until I run out of the NT and Psalms, then just continue finishing the OT perhaps re-reading the NT. I will not hold myself accountable for daily readings because then I will feel guilty when I don’t read and ironically be less likely to read the following day. It’s just going to be a one day at a time process.
I discovered a lot in just this first reading. I love the OT – and I love how the entire bible is pretty much the story of one family. We discover how key players wind up making it to the New Testament – such as Ruth and Rahab, who were both great-grandmothers of Jesus. A widow and a prostitute – how cool is that.
Just the first of many discoveries and revelations I will come to on my journey throughout God’s word I’m sure. My favorite thing is rediscovering old stories I have known my whole life and uncovering new truths to them. I challenge myself to find double layers – something maybe I’m not supposed to do, but it’s fun and enlightening all the same.
