If you don’t have the time or energy to follow courses or teach yourself Russian from books, I suggest busuu.com. I started with it a few weeks ago, and although I haven’t really learned many new words, if you put time in it, it’s perfect for it.
You first get a vocabulary (and they pronounce it), a dialogue, a writing exercise, and in the end a small test. If you pay for it, you can also upload oral exercises. Native speakers who have an account, correct your exercises. I’ve experienced that Russian members correct them very fast.

During my last summer holiday I learned to write the Cyrillic letters and a few basic words and sentences. I suppose this would be the perfect moment to learn more words and possibly start with the grammar (so far I only know that they don’t conjugate the present tense of to be).
I went to Moscow and Saint-Petersburg during the Easter holidays and learned some more words and the imperative sentence: Я не понимаю по Русски (I don’t understand Russian) :)
I really hope that I can put myself to sit down again this summer and learn more.
