Good Guides Make The Difference 3 years ago

This was an amazing experience, life changing, rewarding, and really hard to put into words. This is the safest and the most non-technical of the 7 summits (highest summit on each of the 7 continents), but the summit rate is still only about 50%.

We saw lots of people turn away because of altitude sickness concerns, and most were preventable with the right guides and the right gear. Shitty tour companies are common on Kili, and you may end up spending a few grand and not making it to the top just because you went with a group that didn’t know how to pace your climb, when to push and when not to, etc.

Definitely worth it. Train aggressively for 6 months and get the right clothing to stay warm and you’ll make it.

Final Preparations 3 years ago

I’ve wanted to climb this mountain since I was a kid and heard about a snow-covered mountain on the equator in Africa. I’ve been training for the last six months, and leave in a couple of weeks.

Other than a last-minute injury that I think I can mitigate, I feel pretty well prepared.

Training has not been so much fun recently – mostly because it’s been over 100 degrees here for the last month.

It would have been more appropriate to have posted this a year ago when we came up with this crazy idea, but I just found 43 things. So this is kind of a last minute one.

Good luck to everyone else traning for or planning this climb.
