I don't want to speak too soon but...

..there are some big improvements. She has changed her friendship group and on the whole seems a lot happier. There have been the occasional ups and downs and outbursts but these seem more ‘normal’ and in keeping with what I expected of the teenage years. She hasn’t hit me or her Dad for some time and is maturing into quite a lovely young woman. I know this could all change again overnight but it is good to see glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel….(..I just hope that light isn’t an oncoming train!!)

It had got better but then got a lot worse

The outbursts are happening regularly in school as well as at home. She had calmed down a lot but then started becoming violent again. I don’t know how to move this forward at all – it feels like a nightmarish “Groundhog Day” experience.

Background

Most of the time she is fine but periodically she has outbursts which at best are verbal attacks on myself and my husband and at worst turn into physical attacks both on us and her self-harming. It is a nightmare when this happens and she makes all kinds of accusations and threats. When she is calm she recognises that this behaviour is not acceptable but says she can’t help herself. We are seeking help from School, GP and other organisations who can help her and I with coping strategies. She is due to start anger management counselling next week.
