But there’s actually fairly little context for me to practice. Most people who speak putonghua well also speak English fairly well, and generally want to use their English with me. So the main context for having extended conversations in Chinese is when I’m hanging out with the more advanced foreign students. My spoken Chinese has improved some I’m sure, but not as much as I had hoped, and reading and writing have improved little if any. I need to be more displined about studying, and I need to find some good online novels that aren’t too far above my reading level. Anyone have suggestions? I think I’m going to start with The True Story of Ah Q (http://www.rxgl.net/rxbook/view_book.asp?id=1871), which I think I can make it through if I keep a web dictionary close.
