I’m an AmeriCorps volunteer, just about completing my year of service. I’ve created a website:http://projectchange.artrig.com for my program, which has a reasonably useful links section.
There are a plethora of organizations in need of help.
School systems, hospitals, state web sites, and national programs like americorps are good resources for accredited programs.
idealist.org, craigslist are excellent online resources.
Besides americorps, idealist.org, and the like, local communities are often active in projects like “clean up the neighborhood”, “build a community playground”.
The Urban Institute is a good example of a non-biased research group for serious information. Something like this is a good inspiration for “nuts-and-bolts” types.
