Although I haven’t been finishing up many songs, I’m finding my process more a flood of ideas lately – so am scraping to get them written/recorded/documented as quickly as possible lest I lose the muse. It can be really frustrating having 30-40 ‘idealets’ floating around without any cut tracks to show for it, but I’m trying to stay optimistic and look at it as building up raw materials for about 10-15 really good finished pieces down the road.

4 songs, 2 days, Ableton Live is my new best friend (along with Reason of course). I’d been dreading setting up my ProTools/TDM system again for real sessions, so was pleasantly surprised to find that Live 5’s new recording features (and old-standard loop slicing features) make songwriting much, much easier.
(Note to loopers/remixers- I record all my own tracks/samples/loops from real mikes and instruments, so I’m not talking about slapping pre-recorded loops and soft synth patches together- but recording new ideas and snippets live on gtr/bass/keys/drums, then slicing up the verse/chorus/bridge parts in Live to quickly suss out arrangements from them on the fly. Way faster than cutting up tracks in ProTools, totally dope.)
I’m a convert.
ProTools can kiss my azz henceforth. :)
