Actually it was my mom who did this. She had been “collecting” states virtually all of her life. Then in 2000, she was planning a trip to Minnesota. She realized that North Dakota, her last state, wasn’t all that far away from Minnesota so she rented a car and drove to ND. She visited a tribute wall to Roger Maris (her all-time favorite baseball player). She said the tribute was kinda lame, but she was estatic to visit her 50th state on her 50th birthday!
