Try, try, try .. to stay positive 7 months ago

A friend said that the final months should be easy – no challenging / high-stakes projects would be assigned my way, just tying up lose ends and so on.

But the interim period from giving notice to actually leaving does have rough patches in the emotional sense – being labelled as quitter / deserter, and not being considered as part of the team anymore. (Maybe for the lucky ones, they can’t bear the thought of leaving a wonderful workplace.)

What other people say is just what they think. It costs them nothing to have opinions. And it shouldn’t cost me anything like lost sleep (but it does a little). I’m still human, and being treated with rudeness kind of sucks, but just have to grit my teeth and hang in there.

Knowing there is a definite end to it all is great – just thinking about life beyond my last day at work, and all that optimism comes flooding back :)

I’ve been asked to re-think my decision by my bosses. Twice. Particularly because my department is going to have a hard time coping for a while. If I had deserving colleagues, I’d think twice about quitting at a critical time, and try to help as much as I can. But the fact is I don’t.

Although it is possible to stay on, but at what price? I don’t like the negative atmosphere at work, where an influential and popular few and spread mean gossip about others. And people finding all ways to avoid extra workload, and finding excuses to not pull their weight. I’ve had to cope with the extra work that no one wants to do.

My last day is couple of months away. Plenty of time to waver and let the economic situation play tricks with my resolve. But I’ve got enough savings stashed away for the moment. And here is some more reinforcement…

Just gave notice ... 8 months ago

I’ve been on the verge of breaking down. There’s just too much work and I’ve been missing deadlines. My colleagues tipped off the boss, who called me in and said “Not that they were complaining, just concerned if you were ok.” Heck, if they were truly concerned, they would have talked to me directly and tried to help, instead of reporting on me behind my back.

I’ve been asked to reconsider my resignation, since my department would be shorthanded, and it’d be a “great loss of a valued worker”. If a company values an employee, they shouldn’t work him to death.

I’m leaving in three months. Shorthanded? Well, they brought it upon themselves.
