I have 1/2 acre in the city and I’m thinking about a few 3-4 free range hens for eggs. Those would be some local eggs!
As soon as it’s feasible I’m tearing out the lawn and putting in a garden and chicken manure would be great for the soil.

I joined an organic CSA and loved it. It was more expensive per pound, but the quality was amazing and it got me to eat my veggies before the next pickup. Right now it is on hold because I have been traveling. Instead I shop almost exclusively at a local that makes a point of buying local and marks fruits/ veggies as local.
Buying “in season” takes me a long way toward this goal and saves $$. By buying fresh local in season foods I try more types of greens and save money. Bonus: I rarely shop at Vons/ Safeway/ Albertson’s now.
Just joined BeWise Ranch co op. For $20 every two week we will get tones of Fresh local fruit/ veggies. Very excited about this!
For those in SD did you see the Reader last week. The way they ship food around is totally nuts! and gross! Screw Vons/ Ralphs and packaged food. That shit only adds to my ass and makes me sluggish.
I am not happy that Whole Paycheck, I mean Whole Foods has bought out Henry’s, which offers local fruit and veggies for way less than the major chains and has decent canned foods too without a bunch of chemicals.
The more I read about globalization/ the meat industry/ avian flu etc. the more I think buying and growing locally, especially in SO Cal makes sense.
Planted a small garden last weekend too. Can’t wait for it to bloom
BTW I recommend watching/ reading Fast Food Nation. Totally grosss. I won’t stop eating meat (for a number of reasons) but I sure will stop eating at McD’s once a month. I will still eat occasionally at In N Out because they have a different business model and only buy fresh. I at least half way believe they care about quality. No crazy Jack in the Box ecoli scandals there.
Better yet read the Jungle, followed by Monster at our Door (about the avian flu and agra business). So much and so little has changed.
