- for word on a mortgage. If I get one then I can go and get some place to live … somewhere. I took a day last week so spin around Wicklow and look at some places. None of them were right but if I keep looking I reckon I’ll find something soon. Please, please, please let them give me the money!

It’s time to bite the bullet and see if some crazy financial institution won’t give me a mortgage. I’ll be making a call tomorrow morning.
Its that time of the tear when tax returns are due and a combination of a good year coupled with our country’s outrageous preliminary tax system (where 90% of your tax bill is added to cater for the next years tax) means that my savings have taken a juddering blow to the kidneys followed by a flying drop kick square to the temple. Yes, its financial violence. I feel by turns angry, sorry for myself, accepting then angry again.
Added to the nasty property prices, a government who seem to calculate what you may have saved and then devise fees specifically to take it all off you, well…it all looks rather glum.
I’d love to see a scenario where the gov. finally admit that they have no interest in serving the people and publicly accept that their sole purpose is to have fun at our expense – literally.
The pain is hieghtened by the fact that they awarded themselves a 30-something per cent pay rise this week. The people they serve?....3% last year and 2% this. Robbers and thieves the lot of them. I shall end up in a cardboard box which i shall name after them all.
at the moment. But my initial excitement has cooled somewhat. The closer i look, the more i realise that renovation is a key aspect of low prices (obvious, i know). But i may just have to grasp that nettle, despite the fact that my knowledge of house-renovation is only marginally greater than that of a fish.
Saw a newspaper headline today which claimed that Irish house prices could fall by up to 60%. This is what i need to realistically have ahope of getting on the housing ladder but i cant believe it would ever happen. I’m much better off working on a plan that involves being able to work out of Dublin. Even the thought of that makes me feel giddy inside. Some day….
Last week interest rates were raised agian in europe. The Irish stockexchange had 7bn euro wiped out in a single day and there are real concerns that people who took out massive mortgages to pay for average homes in Irelands ludicrously over-valued property market will now find themselves in real danger of losing their homes.
It makes me so mad. Pure greed put us in this position. And as always its ordinary people who will pay the price. It makes starting out on the property ladder almost impossible for me. Sometimes I hate this country.
I saw a house ‘for sale’ today that i wanted to buy. “I want to buy that house”, I said to Gertrude as we passed by. Unfortunately it costs about ten million quid. Ah well, as Gert said, it would cost a fortune to heat.
For the first time in about ten years house prices in ireland dropped last month. But theres still a way to go before i can afford to do it. Its a terrible thing to contemplate but what i need is a crash in the market. That, or a windfall. Blow wind, blow.
Not easy to do in Ireland with house prices gone mad the way they have. But obstacles aside I am going to do it.
