There is a lighthouse on Alcatraz. So technically all those guys who were in prison there lived in a lighthouse. Sort of. If there is one lighthouse in the world that I don’t want to live in, it’s that one.

..if i could achieve this goal it would help out with loads of others too. For a start i would be saving peoples lives on a pretty much continual basis. It would also assist in the getting fit department assuming that the lighthouse wouldnt have an elevator. Also, I would have to assume that a prolonged stay in such a place would produce at least one shark sighting. Sure it may take a bit of baiting…do sharks like sausages? I bet they do! And given the lack of a local shop it would make giving up cigarettes a darned sight easier.
Living in a lighthouse would turn me into a 43Things SuperHero.
..and read this goal wrong. I was wondering why on earth i wanted to live in a greenhouse, you couldn’t throw stones or anything. Then I read it again.
Given that there is little progress on this goal i have bought myself a small lighthouse garden ornament which i have put in my veggie garden overlooking my lettuces. It looks groovy and should protect them from any rogue shipping that may be in the area.
It has been my intention to put candles in it and enjoy its gentle light while sitting on my garden bench as dusk falls. However this has been made impossible due to seven weeks of continuous rain and my not actually having a garden bench.
Today, more than any other, I want to live in a lighthouse. Every time i get to this particular point in my work graph i find myself buried in an avalanche of escapist desires. It has always been this way. Ever since I started doing this…um…19 years ago. Christ on a bike…19 years!!
Every time i find myself at this point, i swear that i will never do it again; and every time I get through it and get back on the roller-coaster. And every time…every time, I regret it. I think i am looking for a stress free life which i know (in an intellectual way) is a myth. But i also think its time to find a way of living that suits me better than what i do at the moment and that could very well involve a lighthouse! I have always had a dream of being a sea-watcher, where my job is to sit outside my cottage and watch the sea. Every now and then my boss would ring from the big city and ask how things are going. I would take a quick look at the sea – “It all seems fine”, i might say, “theres waves and stuff…a fishing boat out there…fishing, I presume….yup, all good!” And that would be it. Wonderful.
A Us Warship was sailing up the English channel when the radar operator picked up a signal directly in their path. the Captain of the warship got on the radio and made contact with the offending blip.
“This is the captain of the US warship Potomac (for arguments sake). You are currently on a collision course with this vessell. please alter your course four degrees westward”
The reply came in a clipped english accent.
“Negative. You alter YOUR course four degrees westward”
The Captain was not impressed.
“Repeat, this is the US warship Potomac, you are on a collision course with this vessell. Alter your course four degrees westward immediately”
Once again the reply came
“Negative. Advise that US warship Potomac alters its course four degrees westward”
The Captain was outraged
“This is the Captain of the US warship Potomac. Alter your course immediately”
the reply was resolute
“We will not alter our course. Advise that warship Potomac alters its course four degrees westward”
At this point the radar blips were becoming dangerously close and a collision was imminent.
“This is the Captain of Potomac. We are one of the largest warships on earth; part of the largest navy on the seas. We are armed with eighty two cannon; twenty-six anti aircraft batteries; eight torpedo tubes; four ballistic missile silos and two helicopter gunship attack aircraft. We are capable of sinking any ship afloat and of hitting a rubber dinghy with ten thousand pounds of explosives at a distance of ten miles. Alter your course four degrees westward NOW!”
The reply;
“We are a lighthouse”
I have just realised that i have also declared that i want to live in the mountains! if anyone knows of a lighthouse on a mountain, please let me know.
I honestly cannot imagine this ever happening. but its one of those things that i keep in my mind in case the possibility ever arises. Its an idylic fantasy i suppose. I imagine myself as a writer, hugged up against a roaring fire with a storm raging outside. Or waking on a beautiful summer morning knowing that the only intrusion that the day will bring is the sound of the sea braeking on the rocks below and the the occassional sight of a passing ship. The closest I have ever got to this feeling was being on the Skellig Rock off the coast of Kerry. I urge anyone who has the opportunity to go there to go. Just go. Its astonishing.
