Well, how to start? It went badly… and well. I got quite a shock at how the beginning disappeared – I got the feeling that nobody heard it. The play’s fault or circumstance? There was irritating repetition and looseness of character and plot. Afterwards people were reluctant to discuss it. All bad. On the up the side, the purpose of the reading was to discover such things and now I can launch into the 3rd draft with solid views on what needs changing. Onwards and upwards.

Well, I still haven’t directed a play but I have written one, which is even better. I just finished it about 2 weeks ago and am having some friends read it this weekend. Very exciting… and scary. It’s called “Yesterday”, which is actually a pretty crap title but it’ll do for now. I really hope I turn out to be a genius at this.
I have always wanted to direct that play. I must go and see it. I know a guy who runs a theatre company that puts on a lot of shakespeare. Must call him. Must also read the play again… its been a while.
I know that this just isnt going to happen untill i find a play that i really want to direct. Furthermore, i was talking to a guy recently who directs plays for a living and he told me that you should never direct a play unless you know why you want to do it. It may sound simple but it makes good sense. Doing it for the sake of itself is a recipe for disaster.
So how do you find the play script thats right for you? Dont let me down, Google!

Had a notion to direct Romeo & Juliet as a Sean O’Casey, tennement drama. But Shakespeare is a bit big to be directing as your first attempt.
I’ve been in plays and I know how hard a job it is, though of course you dont really know how hard it is to climb a mountain till you’ve climbed one. the scariest aspect of it would be justifying the trust of the people who would be working on it. ‘Cos if you screw up everybody else gets screwed up with you. think I have a lot to offer in this but I’ll never know till i give it a go. First step is to find one thats within reach for a first timer and at the same time grabs my imagination. Hmmm…
