I went to Europe with my boyfriend (who had already backpacked across Europe) and we stayed at his friends place in France. Then we took the TJV to Amsterdam. We had our backpacks that included a lightweight two-person tent and two lightweight mummy bags. We got off the train and rented bicycles as our mode of travel.
It was AWESOME!
Amsterdam is an amazing place to tour on a bike- so GORGEOUS!!! You see so much more when you go at a slower pace and don’t have a map. ;) We weren’t into the stereotypical sites that most Americans desire to see in Amsterdam so we spent a lot of time cruising around and checking out the museums and shopping. And after a glorious day; hanging with the locals (very friendly and informative!); an amazing night sky!!; we then rode our bikes to the ferry and camped out. We were only there for two nights but the accomodations were perfect. The campground had a little restaurant that we could walk to and enjoy a hearty breakfast before venturing out again.
I highly recommend, even the shortest, backpacking trip in Europe!!
